"10 Tips For A Fresh Start In Life"

Embracing a chance for change

Do you ever have a feeling that you’re drifting through life, and not going where you want to go?  Or maybe you’re still worrying about your purposes in life?

If this sounds familiar, then it could be time for you to consider stopping the merry-go-round struggle that life has become, and actually start living instead.

Being able to separate life as you know it, and the concept of really ‘living’ your life again can be difficult to understand, but it’s important to see the difference.  The hand that 'life' deals us can also drag us down and influences around us might also be holding us back.  Sometimes that realisation just hits us that we need change, somewhere, and sometimes that changes means a fresh start.

So if you're in that position of needing to start over, rethink your life, and make new choices, here are some great tips to get you on track.

1. Take charge of your life

There’s only one person responsible for your life that also has the authority to control your life – and that is YOU.  You don’t need to ask permission to live your life, as you being the owner of your life already has that authority by default.  If you feel you do need to ask permission of someone else then you are literally saying they have power over you.  Is that what you really want?

2. Define what living means to you

What do you really want out of life?  If you had a choice, what would you choose for yourself?  Picture that now and imagine yourself living as you would like to be.  What words could you use to describe how you would live your life and what sort of person you would become?  What do you want to do in life?  What is important to you?  Write it down now, and keep it somewhere you will see it often.

3. Examine every aspect of your life, and decide what areas need changing.

How satisfied are you with your life?  Have you ever stopped and asked yourself this question before?  I’m sure we often make comments to ourselves about certain areas of our lives but have you ever taken a look at all the areas of significance that affect you regularly?  Look at everything - your health, your happiness, your finances, career/job, relationships, family and friends, and personal growth; don't leave anything out.  Now is the perfect time to examine all of it and look for ways to improve where you can.

4. Stop living in the future.

Whenever you find yourself thinking about someday in the future in a dreamy moment of hope, or putting something off until you have ‘more time’, stop yourself in your tracks and ask yourself, “Why not now?” Take a moment to reflect on this, as one of the greatest regrets people have in life is wanting to do something, but never getting round to it.  It’s wasted time.  Start doing the things you always wanted to do, and find your passions in life again.   Choose your life every morning by planning one thing you will do that day to feel alive inside.

5. Size matters.

Whatever our lifestyles, we will always come across little niggles, small issues, conflicts of opinion, or things that grate on us as life sneaks in hints of negativity here and there.  Really though, if we don’t take time to recognise these things, they can grow and become larger issues that could stop us in our tracks, or simply swamp us with unnecessary negativity we could avoid.  Even the little things can prevent us from enjoying our days, so deal with them effectively as early as you can to take potential stings away.

6. Surround yourself with positive people.

Draw from people who inspire and motivate you.  Spend time with these people and learn what traits they have that help them enjoy life and be as effective in their daily lives as they can be.  If you don’t already have a mentor, this is a great opportunity to get one; someone that you can learn from and who can encourage you; a positive role model that you look up to.

7. Break the chains of habit.

If you take a close look at your life you will find there are things that you do regularly that only serve to hold you back, and don’t benefit you at all.  They might impact on you reaching your goals, de-motivate you, or cause recurring guilt.  Write down as many habits you can think of that don’t serve you well and make a conscious decision to be rid of them.  Once you’ve made that decision for each item, you can identify a more appropriate way of behaving that sows more seeds of positivity.

8. Learn to plan properly.

To begin living your life properly, it’s highly advisable to put plans in place for the things you’ve always wanted to do.  Even planning your days better adds structure to your life as well so that you’re not rushing from one event to another.  You can still act today starting the ball rolling for things ahead.  Consider goal planning using the S.M.A.R.T. goals acronym of your goals being Specific, Measurable, Action-based, Realistic, and Time-bound, so you can be clear on what you want, how you will know you’ve been successful in reaching it, you have to actually to “do” something to get there, you are able to do it within your means, and you can set a target date to aim for.

9. All that you are.

Everyone is unique and therefore you are blessed with a set of skills and talents that no-one else has.  Use everything you have and all that you are to make the most of your life, and to live an as abundant and joy-filled life as you can.  Create the new life that you want, and the new life that you feel you 'deserve'.

10. Live your life with purpose.

Be active, and be proactive.  Make conscious, confident, and decisive choices.  When you don’t make choices when you have the opportunity, those circumstances tend to choose for you and as a result you have to follow what happens before you.  When you make the choices you are in a better position to lead, and determine how things happen for you.  Create your own future.
